Alberta Alignment

A Public Art Installation for Alberta Main Street funded by the Portland Main Street Program. Located at NE Alberta St. & 13th, 18th, 21st, 24th, 26th, and 30th Avenues

Working with the Alberta Arts District, we created a series of sculptures that progress chromatically and thematically along Alberta Street in Portland, OR. Graphic patterns interweave with lyrical sculptural Glyphs, celebrating distinct intersections through symbol and color. The graphic patterns, inspired by woven Kente cloth, serve as a metaphor for the urban fabric of the neighborhood. Lyrical “Glyphs” reference the area’s cultural history with images of hair, beads, urban farming, and a welcoming hand. Each of the seven installations is a variation of the visible spectrum, symbolizing chakras, or energetic nodes, in the community.

The Alberta Main Street Design Committee invited over 25 local artists to submit design proposals for the project asking them to address nine overall goals. Larry Holmes, Design Committee Chair shared, “The project goals were not insignificant. We asked artists to propose installations that created a street identity inspired by the texture, character and diversity of the community, provided continuity from end to end, but with diversity of form and concept and satisfied appetites for exciting and provocative sensory experiences. We really asked the impossible so couldn’t be happier that we got everything we asked for and more!”
